The Prince's Pass
While the High Septon and king ruled from oldtown, they grew ever more fundimentalist. In an effort to galvinise support, the High Septon, with the suport of the crown and small council launched a massive campaign against sexual deviants which would lose them another kingdom. While in the Westerlands, Reach, and the Stormlands, the support of the lords was guaranteed, this had the opposite effect in Dorne, where acceptence for homosexuality, bisexuality, polyamity, and incest were widespread. Princess Rhoyne had been hesitant to side with the king when the rebellion first broke out, since she had been worried about the consequences of a Bersyn Monarch, worried that they would impose their forbidal of sept-building on the entire continent, but now, with a Targaryen being supported for the throne, and driven away by the royal crackdown, Rhoyne threw her lot in with the 5 lords, becoming the 4th of the 9 constituencies to join in with the rebels.
Princess Rhoyne is a special character. As her name would suggest, she was named for the Rhoyne River in Essos, and was probably the reigning dornish prince with the most Rhoynar blood since Princess Nymeria ruled with Prince Moros Martell as her consort. Princess Rhoyne, despite having made questionable decisions in past, including launching a naval expedition to Essos to retake the Rhoyne itself, she would prove vital in the battle of Highgarden thanks to her abilty to use Rhoynish water magic. The Princess was known by her enemies as the witch queen. She was able to control water like the old rhoynish wizards.
Once the crackdowns reached a certain intensity, Princess Rhoyne called her bannars, and resolved to march on the Reach. She resolved to march north up the Prince’s Pass into the stormlands, and to attack Highgarden, where the King’s sister was lady of highgarden. She hoped that capturing his sister would be enough to force a surrender.
Even though crossing the Torentine would allow a quicker route to Oldtown, The armies of their allies would be travelling down the Rose Road, and they figured that it would be a good idea to join them on the journey, and increase their standing with them to increase their hand in the negotiations by taking highgarden, a crucial castle, and the capital of The Reach.
The treck through the Prince’s Pass was dificult. It wasn’t helped by the fact that House Qorgyle refused the call to banners, and remained loyal to the old king. House Qorgoyle would remain a thorn in the side of Rhoyne Martell. Lord Qorgyle would eventually invite the knights of The Reach to invade Dorne across the torrentine, only to be rendered unable to cross the fast flowing river. Princess Rhoyne had been aware of the risk of such an invasion, and left House Dayne with all of their bannermen to guard the western border of Dorne from such an invasion, and while the castles west of the Torrentine fell, the plan worked, and they were halted at the Torrentine.
When the Dornish force emerged from the Prince’s Pass, they were in dire need of provisions, and while they had been able to restock at the Tower of Joy, Princess Rhoyne had severely underestimated the rate at which an army consumed food. Her estimates were based off of the campaign in the Rhoyne, where they were turned back by Volantis fairly early on, and the land was fertile too, so they could easily buy many crops in local markets, and had been able to establish a fort at Sar Mell and establish control of the fertile land nearby. The original plan had been to head north all the way to ashford, where there was a river which would allow Rhoyne to use her magic to help the troops, maybe flood the castle, but now they would have to either head east to restock at Vulture’s Roost, or take Nightsong.
